Romania, Moldova sign education, medical emergency agreements

The Romanian Government and the Moldovan Government on Friday signed an agreement on education cooperation and an agreement on cooperation in medical emergencies, as part of a visit by Ponta to Chisinau.

State Secretary with Romania's Interior Ministry Raed Arafat signed on behalf of Romania's Government the agreement on reciprocal support for cross-border interventions in medical emergencies. Also signed was a cooperation and assistance programme between the education ministries of the two countries.

Prime Minister Ponta said the signing of the agreement on cooperation in medical emergencies will make it possible for cross-border operations that will save human lives. 'We have signed the necessary documents for cross-border operations to be allowed in case of medical emergencies. The helicopter units of Iasi and Galati in Romania can cross the border in Moldova to save human lives. I think this is also a symbolic agreement, but it mainly materialises a certain type of cooperation we need. I hope I will be able to attend the opening of the first Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) centre in Moldova, in Balti, alongside the Moldovan prime minister. I believe SMURD to Romania is one of the systems of which it can be very proud and that can save human lives. I believe Moldova needs such system,' said Ponta.

He added that Romania and Moldova will be able to deepen their cooperation in education because of the agreement signed. 'In the area of education, under the agreement signed today and because of cooperation between the two ministries, we can expand all training projects for teachers in Moldova, the projects that coordinate standard and certification systems, working together on school curricula. Besides the number of scholarships in force we have also started this academic year a new kind of assistance, namely scholarships for Moldovan students who want to study in Romania for one year,' said Ponta.

Romania ready to further support Republic of Moldova's European roadmap

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Friday discussed in Chisinau with President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti the two states' bilateral projects, reiterating at the same time the support Romania is willing to further provide for the Republic of Moldova's European roadmap and for the modernization of this state.

'Feelings aside, let us also do some good practical things: build schools and kindergartens in the Republic of Moldova, complete the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, implement the Agreement on transboundary interventions in medical emergencies (performed by the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication - SMURD), launch new Romanian investments in the Republic of Moldova,' said Victor Ponta cited in a release of the Presidential Administration in Chisinau.

The Romanian Prime Minister expressed confidence that the Moldovan population will enthusiastically support the idea of European integration, as the effects thereof become increasingly visible.

Nicolae Timofti thanked Victor Ponta for the firm support the authorities in Bucharest offer the Republic of Moldova with the process of European integration. He also voiced confidence that the Republic of Moldova will continue its European track despite external pressures.

'The external pressures we face will not deter us from signing this year the Association Agreement with the European Union,' Nicolae Timofti underscored.

Romanian Government must fully support Chisinau's actions concerning Transnistria and Gagauzia

Romanian authorities must support all the actions of Chisinau to settle the issues concerning the secessionist region of Transnistria and the Gagauz autonomy, and must refrain from detrimental statements to the Republic of Moldova, Prime Minister Victor Ponta told a joint broadcast of Radio Romania Actualitati and Radio Chisinau on Friday.

Ponta said that the Romanian Government will support all the decisions made in Chisinau on the two questions.

'I think that the Romanian Government must fully and unconditionally support the actions taken by the Government of Chisinau to solve such difficult problems as Transnistria and Gagauzia. I will provide diplomatic and political support for the future steps considered necessary by the Government of Chisinau,' Ponta said.

'Those are difficult areas where the Government of Chisinau is trying, from my point of view, using all the diplomatic means, to find a diplomatic and constitutional solution. The Romanian Government and myself will consider every time, when issuing statements about Moldova, the interests of the people here, not my interests in Bucharest. I realize that things are seen more clearly from here, from Chisinau, than from Bucharest. We are far away; it might seem to us that there are simple solutions; I don't think there are simple solutions,' Prime Minister Ponta added.

Romania expects nothing from Republic of Moldova, it only gives it absolutely brotherly support

Romania expects nothing from the Republic of Moldova, it is only willing to give it the entire support, especially for continuing its European path, Premier Victor Ponta told a Radio Romania Actualitati-Radio Chisinau joint broadcast in Chisinau on Friday.

'I am saying it here in Chisinau, it is important for you to learn from Romania's mistakes, not to repeat them, but to learn from the good things Romania has done too and the good direction for Moldova is the European integration,' said Victor Ponta.

In this context he said that there would be elections in 2014 in both countries, but the one in the Republic of Moldova is more important as the direction the Republic of Moldova will go to depends on its result.

He added that Romania must support the Republic of Moldova not only by words of mouth, but also by deeds. In this context he mentioned Romania's willingness to offer 20 million euros to the neighbouring country for building and repairing kindergartens, one-year scholarships to be given to the students of the Republic of Moldova who want to study in Romania, the system of the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication to be put into practice in the Republic of Moldova, 1.2 million euros to be given for building the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline in the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
