Romanian Naval Authority, Bulgarian counterpart to conduct Safety Net project

The Romanian Naval Authority (ANR) on Tuesday held a conference to launch the Danube Safety Net project, financed by 5.6 million euro from the European Regional Development Fund, which, together with the Bulgarian Maritime Administration, will develop an integrated response system for emergencies on the Danube.

At the opening of the event, ANR coordinator Laurentiu Zanfir announced that the Danube Safety Net project is designed to create an optimal response and intervention system for incidents or accidents on the joint Bulgarian-Romanian portion of the river in order to improve naval transport safety.

"Our objective is to improve navigation safety throughout the Danube River between Romania and Bulgaria by developing a common geographical information system for emergencies. In terms of objectives, the Danube Safety Net follows the IRIS Europe, RIS and IRIS Europe II projects," said Zanfir.

The ANR official also said that the Danube Safety Net project is aimed at creating data centres located at Turnu Magurele and Nicopole, the acquisition by the Romanian side of two high-speed sailboats for fast operation and the arrangement by the Bulgarian side of two towed barges as mobile disaster intervention centres equipped with firefighting equipment, rescue and recovery, and medical assistance.

"The project has a 36-month implementation period and a general budget of 5,640,627 euro, of which ANR receives 2,623,304 euro. At the end of 2021, when the project is fully implemented, the response capacity of the beneficiaries should be five minutes for alarming emergencies," said Zanfir.
