A Romanian in three is exposed to the risk of poverty and social exclusion, although Romania  en four years have passed since the adoption of the global agenda Agenda 2030 and the Obproposed four years ago to eradicate extreme poverty until 2030, said on Monday the Foundation World Vision Romania.

When four years have passed since the adoption of the global agenda Agenda 2030 and the Obproposed four years ago to eradicate extreme poverty until 2030, said on Monday the Foundation World Vision Romania.

jejectives for Sustainable Development (ODD), the statistics data show that Romania is far from meeting the targets proposed even for 2020, and those for 2030 seem non-doable, according to the foundation.

On Monday, the foundation World Vision Romania and the National Network anti-poverty and social inclusion organized a debate to analyse what the country proposed in the National Strategy for the sustainable development of Romania, the document which harmonises the Agenda 2030, as the reality was in 2019 and most important, who and what they have to do to meet the targets.

One of the main objectives in the strategy is the eradication of extreme poverty for all citizens until 2030 and the reduction with at least half of the number of citizens who live in relative poverty. The Foundation warns that, in reality, the rate of poverty and inequity keep very high in Romania, which has a paradox of social inequity and poverty, although the economic growth of the country is over the EU average.

Thus, according to the edition of 2019 of the European Semester, one out of three Romanians is exposed to the risk of poverty and social exclusion. Moreover, Romania has the highest rate of poverty among  the people working in the EU (17.4%).

Until 2030, Romania proposed to reduce the rate of early drop-out from the education system. In reality, getting the value of 16.4% in 2019, the rate of people (aged between 18-24 years old)who dropped out from school and professional training is one of the highest in the EU, according to the foundation. In the rural environment, the rate is 27.1% and in the Roma population  it is 77% and 38.7% of the children aged up to 15 are functionally illiterate.

Romania proposed the adoption of these policies, fiscal, salarial and social protection especially, with a view to reducing the inequities, the proportion of disadvantaged groups respectively. The foundation warns that the level of poverty and social exclusion in the rural environment is  twice higher than what happens in the urban environment.

‘The rural environment and the children are included among the disadvantaged groups, as one out of two children face the risk of poverty. Romania has the highest share in the EU of children who live in poverty’ the press release says.

The specialists draw the attention that a concrete plan for implementation of Agenda 2030 is needed, and the representatives of the Department for Sustainable Development stated, in the debate that until the end of the year this plan will be finalized.
