Tariceanu: Hypocrisy rules in the PPE since Manfred Weber is nominated to the leadership of the European Commission
President of the Senate Calin Popescu-Tariceanu stated on Wednesday that he talked in Brussels with the ALDE Group (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) of the European Parliament about the referendum on family and the gendarmes' intervention during the protest of 10 August.
"There was a question related to the gendarmes' intervention during the rally on 10 August and the group leader mentioned very briefly the draft law which stipulates the necessity to provide transparency to the funding sources for the NGOs. Of course, I have given the necessary explanations, I have presented the point of view of the ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) . (...) There was also a question from of a parliamentarian regarding corruption, who used the phrase that it is a deeply rooted phenomenon in Romania. I said that this is a phenomenon that concerns us, but it is as deeply rooted as it is in other countries, given that the European statistics places Romania somewhere in the middle of the European countries ranking," Tariceanu stated at the Palace of Parliament.
According to him, another topic was related to the vote of MEPs Norica Nicolai and Renate Weber in respect to setting in motion article 7 of the EU Treaty regarding Hungary.
The ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats -minor at rule) leader Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated on Wednesday when referring to the activation of article 7 against Hungary that the European People’s Party has become’ ruled by hypocrisy’ since the leader of the group has received the chance to be nominated the chairman of the European Commission. He added that Angela Merkel the chancellor of Germany named Manfred Weber as chairman of the European Commission if PPE wins the elections at European level.
The leader of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber said on Tuesday that he "is extremely worried about the situation in Romania", after a meeting he had in Brussels with Prime Minister Viorica Dancila
‘Since Mr.Weber was designated as candidate he has changed his point of view and proposed that the European Parliament vote for the application of article 7 for Hungary. Mr.Weber probably wants to show his gratitude for this designation and take a tough action with Hungary. This hypocrisy I see and I cannot pretend I don’t’ Tariceanu said.
Hungary was criticised several times by the European Union due to the laws regarding the freedom of expression, due to the organisation of the judicial system, of the electoral one and in the context of their position regarding migration. The right government in Budapest is accused that they break the fundamental norms of the European Union.
In December 2017 the European Commission proposed to the Council of the EuropeanUnion the adoption of a simiar decision in the case of Poland due to the situation of the Polish judicial system.
