The European Commissionaire Vera Jourova: EC will act with all means if Romania does not answer appropriately


The situation in Romania is extremely volatile and,if this country does not answer appropriately, the European Commission will act with all means,stated on Monday the European commissionaire for justice, consummers and equality of gender,Vera  Jourova,in the debate regarding the rule of law in Romania held in the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The EC representative said that the community executive requires Romania  to hold consultations,to take into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission and those included in the report drawn up through the Mechanism  for Cooperation and Verification (MCV).’ It is not too late for Romania to go back on the track of reforms’ Jourova added.

She mentioned that the prime-minister of EC Frans Timmermans and premier Viorica Dancila had several meetings and both the EC and the Romanian experts had also meetings, but,unfortunately, the Commission did not reach the conclusion that ‘ Romania is on the right track’.

The European commissionaire for  justice Vera Jourova stated that the debate is about the very concrete risks that Romania steps back  in connection with the rule of law, saying that there is the risk of interference in justice in cases of corruption.

‘Romania must be come back  to the road of reforms (…).Words for the  sake of words are not enough’ the European Commissionaire said.

She also mentioned the situation of Laura Codruta Kovesi and the amendment of the criminal legislation.

The European Parliament gathered  on Monday in its plenary to discuss the situation of rule of law in Romania, at the request of the PPE group.By comparison to the previous debate, when premier Viorica Dancila held a speech in the plenary, at the discussions on Monday she will not be present. The MEP Cristian Preda announced,before the debate in the EP regarding the rule of law in Romania, that nobody from the government would be present, his conclusion being that ‘ PSD and ALDE ( ruling coalition) behave as if we were not in the EU’.
