Agriculture: Romania imported foodstuff of over 5.43 billion euros in 8 months

Romania recorded a deficit of 1.14 billion euros in the first 8 months of the year, in the foodstuff trade, on the rise by 24% compared to the same period of 2018, when it amounted to 923.44 million euros, according to MADR data.

In the mentioned period of time, exports grew by 6%, to 4.28 billion euros, while imports grew by 9.3%, to 5.43 billion euros.

The overall quantity of foodstuff exported over January-August 2019 in EU and non EU countries was almost double compared to the imported one, but Romania continues to export mainly raw materials and imports processed products with high added value.

In the first 8 months 11.23 million tons of foodstuff were exported, on the rise against the same period of last year, when 10.801 million tons were recorded. Import amounted to 5.87 million tons in 8 months, against 5.65 million tons in the same period of 2018.

According to MADR data, pork meat imports grew both in quantity and value compared to the same period of 2018, ranking first in the top of imported products. 

Imports of bakery products grew from 93,816 tons of 194.98 million euros, in the first 8 months of 2018 to 102,851 tons and 221.07 million euros spent for these products in  January-August 2019.

As for exports, Romania continues to get the highest incomes from cereal deliveries in EU and non EU countries, wheat ranking first with 820.07 million euros and over 4.4 million tons. In the same period of 2018 there were exports of 4.12 million tons of wheat worth 709.58 million euros.

Corn ranks second with 2.93 million tons and 584.32 million euros, cigars and cigarettes with 25,330 tons (445.95 million euros), sunflower seeds with 816,906 tons (322.65 million euros) and other tobaccos with 5,480 tons and 163.52 million euros.

According to the source, for positions where commercial deficits were recorded, such as vegetables, the institution announces the continuation of granting aid for growing tomatoes produced in Romania  over a long period of time. 

In 2018, Romania recorded a deficit of 1.153 billion euros in the grade with foodstuff, on the rise by 35.1% against 2017, when it registered 853.9 million euros.

2013 and 2014 are the only years when Romania concluded with excess in the foodstuff trade, a plus of 300 million euros an 500 million euros, after 20 years when foodstuff imports exceeded exports. Since 2015 it returned to deficit, with minus 89 million euros.
