Agriculture: Romania, responsible for two thirds of EU corn exports in 2020/2021 season

EU corn exports in 2020/2021 season, which started on July 1,2020, reached 1.274 million tons by January 31, 2021, according to data issued by the European Commission on Monday.

 

It is less than half the quantity of 2.958 million tons of corn exported in the same period of the previous season. Among member states, the biggest corn exporter is Romania by far, with 854,143 tons, that is about 67% of overall EU exports.

Also, over July 1,2020 – January 31, 2021, EU wheat exports amounted to 14.99 million tons, on the drop compared to 18.02 million tons in the same period of the previous season.

 

The biggest wheat exporters since the beginning of the present season to the present, were: France (4.013 million tons), Lithuania (2.3 million tons), Latvia (1.95 million tons), Germany (1.859 million tons), Poland (1.72 million tons) and Romania (1.526 million tons).

 

European Commission data also show that EU barley exports were 3.92 million tons over July 1, 2020 – January 31, 2021, on the drop compared to 4.55 million tons in the similar period of the previous season.

 

According to data supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, communicated upon Agerpres request, the overall cereal yield in Romania dropped in 2020 by half compared to 2019 because of extreme soil drought which affected some farming areas in the country , totaling a little over 17 million tons. 

 

Romania's wheat yield recorded minus 41% compared to 2019, totaling 6.092 million tons, from an area of 2.088 million ha and an average of 2,917 kg/ha, against 4,749 kg/ha the previous year.
