Infrastructure : Avram Iancu Airport to expand passenger terminals on RON 225m investment

The Avram Iancu International Airport of Cluj-Napoca says it will expand its passenger terminal on an investment of over RON 225 million.

"The project under which the extension of the terminal and the platform for aircraft parking is carried out is being considered by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure with a view to financing. The value of the contract is RON 225,422,225.72, with approximately RON 136,912,500 (some 60%) being European money from European funds and from the national budget," according to a press statement released on Thursday by the airport.

The implementation of the new project entails expanding the departure terminal by approximately 7,200 square metres and the aircraft parking platform by almost 9,000 square metres. The new spaces will be equipped with state-of-the-art security devices of the C3 standard type, and two boarding gates for foreign flights and one boarding gate for domestic flights will be built.

"Securing financing from European funds is a priority with us in order to continue the development and modernisation of the airport. The extension of the terminal will lead to an increase in the processing capacity and the comfort level of passengers. It is a very important project considering that in 2023 we will exceed 3 million passengers and we estimate increases in passenger traffic for the coming years as well," Avram Iancu Airport General Director David Ciceo is quoted as saying in the statement.

Following the extension of the terminal, the Cluj International Airport will have a larger passenger processing area, which should lead to an increase in the level of comfort for passengers and for employees who work at the airport.

Once the works are done, managing the flow of passengers will be optimised during busy hours, especially at peak hours, with the performance of the airport activity under appropriate circumstances. In the new configuration, the departure terminal and the extended aircraft parking platform meet the demands of growing passenger traffic, as well as of a larger number of flights expected for the future.
