Obesity prevalence in Romania is 36%

The current prevalence of obesity in Romania is 36%, Health Ministry's cardiology committee head Dragos Vinereanu said on Monday.

He had an intervention at the conference "Obesity - a public health problem: information, awareness, medical education," organised at the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF).

According to the specialist, in 10% of cases it is severe obesity, type II, and morbid obesity represents 3% of the cases. "We are talking about a major public health problem in Romania," Vinereanu pointed out.

He mentioned that 51% of the world's population will be obese or overweight in the next 12 years.

On a national level, Dragos Vinereanu mentioned a screening done on 150,000 "so-called healthy" subjects, which showed 75% prevalence of obesity or overweight.

Vinereanu recalled that treatments for obesity are now available, but these must be coupled with lifestyle change, which is "essential."

UMF "Carol Davila" rector Viorel Jinga stressed that doctors should be an example for their patients regarding nutrition.

He announced that a pilot project will be carried out at the student canteen of UMF to see the number of calories in each food and will be presented to the students. A similar project will also be carried out at Politehnica Bucharest.
