Passengers transported by plane in 2017 up 23.3pct

The number of passengers traveling last year by plane was about 20.222 million people, up 23.3 percent compared to 2016, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The largest passenger transport shares were registered at Henri Coanda Bucharest (6.456 million passengers boarded and 6.346 million passengers landed), Cluj-Napoca (1.356 million passengers boarded and 1.322 million passengers landed) and Traian Vuia Timisoara (797,200 passengers boarded and 823,600 landed).

In international passenger transport, the first ten airports of origin (where passengers landing in Romania originate from), established according to the number of passengers in regular flights, are: London-Luton, 795,723 passengers, Milan-Bergamo, 431,893 passengers, Munich, 418,946 passengers, Madrid Barajas, 317,194 passengers, Rome-Ciampino, 313,935 passengers, Tel Aviv, 282,226 passengers, Vienna, 240,611 passengers, Bologna, 236,694 passengers, Barcelona, 219,497 passengers, Amsterdam, 215,317 passengers.

In terms of boarding, most regular passengers boarded for London Luton - 814,970 passengers, Munich - 428,283 passengers, Milan-Bergamo - 420,887 passengers, Madrid Barajas - 314,678 passengers, Rome Ciampino - 314,227 passengers, Tel Aviv - 285,144 passengers, Vienna - 245,350 passengers, Bologna - 235,944 passengers, Amsterdam - 223,276 passengers, Barcelona - 217,075 passengers.

The main countries (after the airport of origin) where passengers of regular flights who landed in Romania originate from, were the following: Italy - 1,811,262 passengers, the United Kingdom - 1,394,099 passengers, Germany -1,249,639 passengers, Spain - 871,550 passengers, France - 435,665 passengers, Belgium - 319,688 passengers, Israel - 284,245, the Netherlands - 272,809 passengers and Turkey - 272,514 passengers.

After the destination country, most regular passengers boarded for Italy - 1,795,966 passengers, the United Kingdom - 1,446,224 passengers, Germany - 1,303,869 passengers, Spain - 869,436 passengers, France - 438,961 passengers, Belgium - 322,885 passengers, Israel - 287,397 passengers, the Netherlands - 281,130 passengers, Turkey - 270,903 passengers.
