Telecom. IT: All mobile phone operators fulfill the obligation of signal coverage for 98% of Romania's population

ANCOM (National Authority for Communications Management and Regulations) announced that it completed a new coverage checking campaign for mobile phone services and all operators had fulfilled the obligation of signal coverage for 98% of Romania's population.

According to field measurements, RCS&RDS covers mobile voice services for 98.8% of the population, Orange Romania -98.5%, Telekom Mobile -98.5% and Vodafone Romania -98.4%. Besides the mobile operators'interest in the Romanian market, materialized in investments to increase the coverage degree, I consider that the measurements made by ANCOM and included in the aisemnal.ro map, had an important contribution to reaching that goal. In order to help both users and operators, besides upgrading the aisemnal.ro website we also developped the application aisemnal.ro for Android and IOS systems, which can be downloaded free from application stores,” said Cristina Popa, ANCOM CEO.

The obligation of achieving coverage is a permanent one and will be monitored by ANCOM until the end of the licence validity, which is April 5, 2029, through annual measuring campaigns at national level.

The campaign was carried out between May and October 2022, signal coverage being measured by crossing accessible roads, boulevards and main and secondary streets.

13,388 localities with more than ten inhabitants were checked, covering 240,000 km on national, county, town and communal roads.

Areas inhabited by 20,116,846 people were measured out of the total of 20,121,587 Romania's inhabitants. The voice service coverage was calculated as the ratio between the number of people covered and Romania's overall population.

According to the radio spectrum use licences owned, Orange, Vodafone and Telekom Mobile had to cover voice services in areas inhabited by at least 98% of Romania's population by means of their own radio network access, until April 5, 2017, while RCS&RDS until April 5, 2019.
