Telecom. IT: Average mobile Internet traffic doubled to 2.6 GB/month/person in 2018


The National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority (ANCOM) announced that Romania exceeded 5 million fixed Internet lines, of which 2 millions are optic fiber, while the average mobile Internet traffic doubled to 2.6 GB/month/person.

2018 was the second year on a row when the average mobile Internet traffic doubled, reaching 2.6 GB/month/person.

According to the number of active mobile Internet connections in 2018, the market leader had a market share of 40%, the main competitor 25%, the other suppliers totaling 35%, ANCOM data show.

Data processed by ANCOM for 2018 show that there are 10.1 million  4G connections, on the rise by 27%/year so that it has reached 51% of overall mobile Internet connections. Together with 3G connections, there were 17.2 million connections to high speed mobile Internet connections, that is about 90% of the total of 19.9 million mobile Internet connections.

According to ANCOM statistics, the number of fixed Internet connections exceeded 5 millions , reaching 5.1 millions by the end of 2018, 7% more than the previous year, on the background of the robust increase by 16% of high speed fixed Internet connections of at least 100 Mbps and the reduction of those who ensure speeds lower than 100 Mbps.

The share of very high speed connections (at least 100 Mbps) reached 69% at the end of 2018.

In 2018, thee was a traffic of 25 GB/month/person through fixed Internet, with an increase of 15% against the previous year.

Last year, the penetration rate of fixed Internet per 100 households was 62% at national level, 74% in urban areas and 46% in rural areas.

The report of statistic data on the electronic communications market in Romania for 2018 is made by ANCOM based on statistic data reported every 6 months by suppliers who must send ANCOM the values of indicators corresponding to service categories.
