Romania's energy output down in H1 amid hydropower dip

Romania's energy output fell by an annual 5.6% in the first six months of 2024, to 8.536 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), as the the output of hydropower stations fell by an annual 24.1% to 8.632 TWh, the statistical office said, citing provisional data.

 

Romania's energy resources, including imports, totalled 15.659 million TOE in the six months through June, down 2.9% on the year, the statistical office said in a statement on Tuesday. Imports amounted to 7.123 million TOE, up by an annual 0.5%.

 

Romania's own electricity output and imports totalled 33.222 TWh in the review period, inching down by 1.5% year-on-year.

 

Thermal power plants generated some 8.351 TWh of electricity in the first six months of 2024, with their output edging down by 0.4% on the year.

 

Electricity generation by Cernavoda, Romania’s sole nuclear power plant, ticked down by 3.1% to 5.178 TWh in the January-June period.

 

Wind farms generated some 3.414 TWh of electricity, down by an annual 14.5%, while solar plants generated 1.673 TWh, up 62.6%.

 

Final electricity consumption inched up by an annual 0.8% to 24.765 TWh in the review period.

 

Romania’s electricity exports decreased by an annual 8.7% to 5.876 TWh in the first six months of the year, while imports jumped 65.9% to 5.974 TWh.

 

The country produced 1.353 million TOE of crude oil, down 3.8% on the year, and 929,700 TOE of coal, down 19.8%, in January-June. Natural gas production rose 1.3% year-on-year, reaching 3.803 million TOE.

 

Romania's energy production fell 0,8% to 17.0 million TOE in 2023.

 

TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
