BNR: Monetary indicators – May 2021

According to data issued by the National Bank of Romania, at end-May 2021, broad money (M3) amounted to RON 505,771.4 million, up 0.4 percent (-0.1 percent in real terms)month on month and 13.5 percent (9.4 percent in real terms) year on year.

 

At end-May 2021, loans to non-government sector granted by credit institutions increased by 0.9 percent (0.4 percent in real terms) from April 2021 to RON 296,269.3 million. RON-denominated loans, representing 70.6 percent of total volume of loans to non-government sector, moved up 1.3 percent, whilst foreign currency-denominated loans, representing 29.4 percent of total loans to non-government sector, decreased by RON 0.4 million when expressed in RON (up 0.1 percent when expressed in EUR).

 

In year-on-year comparison, loans to non-government sector advanced 10.1 percent (6.1 percent in real terms), on the back of the 15.4 percent increase in RON-denominated loans (11.3 percent in real terms) and the 1.0 percent decrease in foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON (down 2.5 percent when expressed in EUR).

 

Credit to general government moved up 1.7 percent in May 2021 from the previous month to RON 160,879.2 million and 18.1 percent (13.9 percent in real terms) year on year.

 

Deposits of non-government resident customers advanced by 0.6 percent month on month to RON 435,903.8 million and the annual growth rate was 13.7 percent (9.5 percent in real terms).

 

RON-denominated deposits of residents, representing 65.1 percent of deposits of non-government customers, moved up 0.5 percent to RON 283,768.2 million month on month and 15.4 percent (11.3 percent in real terms) year on year.

 

RON-denominated household deposits went down 0.1 percent to RON 156,879.2 million month on month and increased by 12.8 percent (8.7 percent in real terms) year on year.

 

RON-denominated deposits of other sectors (non-financial corporations and non-monetary financial institutions) went up 1.2 percent (to RON 126,889.0 million) month on month and up 18.9 percent (14.6 percent in real terms) year on year.

Foreign currency-denominated deposits of residents, representing 34.9 percent of total volume of deposits of non-government customers, increased by 0.8 percent against April 2021 to RON 152,135.6 million when expressed in domestic currency (when expressed in EUR, these deposits increased 0.9 percent to EUR 30,923.1 million). In year-on-year comparison, this indicator grew 10.5 percent when expressed in RON and 8.7 percent when expressed in EUR.

 

Foreign currency-denominated deposits of households went up 0.2 percent from April 2021 to RON 109,688.4 million when expressed in RON (up 0.3 percent when expressed in EUR). On an annual basis, this indicator expanded by 10.3 percent when expressed in domestic currency and by 8.6 percent when expressed in EUR.

 

Foreign currency-denominated deposits of other sectors advanced 2.4 percent against April 2021 to RON 42,447.3 million when expressed in RON (2.5 percent when expressed in EUR). Compared to May 2020, this indicator moved up 10.9 percent when expressed in RON (up 9.1 percent when expressed in EUR).
