Romanians can earn more on the stock exchange than if they keep their savings in bank deposits and decision-makers should encourage a much larger participation of the population in the capital market, Adrian Tanase, CEO of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) said on Tuesday.

"Why are we with our capital market at such a low level? Because we have a primary market with very few companies addressing the capital market for financing, we have few companies to go public," he told the conference "Romania's Development Strategy", organized by the Bursa newspaper.

A second reason is the low participation of the population in the capital market, he added.

"For the capital market to become a pillar of society, all the stakeholders of this society should encourage a much larger participation in the capital market. We will not achieve this participation very quickly, but in the long run, I would like us to acknowledge that this is the main issue, we must have a much larger participation of people. They should take their savings from local deposits, keep them in movable values, which is a gain for them, the financial independence being improved upon retirement, if they do so. It's a simple message, there is nothing complicated, we just need to focus on this message," Tanase added.
