The government on Friday approved an amendment to the loan agreement between Romania and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) financing the Safer, Inclusive and Sustainable Schools in Romania project, extending its implementation and fund disbursement period by one year, to 30 June 2028.

According to a government press release, the EUR 100 million project is aimed at modernising school infrastructure and improving the safety and energy efficiency of pre-university education facilities.

"Contracts worth EUR 83.11 million, representing 83.1% of the loan, have been signed so far, while expenditure amounts to EUR 47.96 million. The extension of the implementation period is necessary to allow the investments to be completed within a realistic timeframe, against the backdrop of rising construction costs, a shortage of skilled workers and delays in obtaining certain approvals and permits," the government said.

The restructuring of the project will also allow available resources to be focused on priority investments.

"This will allow the completion of 11 new schools, comprising 12 buildings and their associated facilities, as well as 18 modular schools intended for the temporary relocation of pupils while construction work is under way. The necessary technical documentation will be prepared for the other 11 schools included in the first tranche. Through these measures, the Ministry of Education and Research aims to ensure the completion of priority investments and the achievement of the project's objectives, with an emphasis on the safety of pupils and teachers, modern learning conditions and energy efficiency," the press release said.

The approved amendments do not increase Romania's financial obligations towards the IBRD, the cited source added.
