Ambassador Jinga statement on ECOSOC anniversary: The 70th anniversary of the Economic and Social Council
On 22 January 2016, the Permanent Representative of Romania to the UN, Ambassador Ion Jinga, delivered a statement on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Economic and Social Council.
The commemorative event brought together key figures and stakeholders from ECOSOC’s past and present which have contributed to strengthening the role of the Council in the international architecture for a more efficient response to the global challenges. The debate has been placed in the context of the recent adoption of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development which requires the recalibration of the Council’s key functions to adequately support the implementation of the sustainable development goals.
The representative of Romania has welcomed the organization of the debate at a time when a new emphasis was placed on multilateral diplomacy by adopting the agendas for sustainable development and climate change, reconfirming at the same time the interdependence of the challenges facing the international community. “In the past 70 years, we have witnessed that peace and security depend on a multitude of factors, and that for the international system to work, peace, development, good governance and human rights have to coexist at the same time’.
Underlining the outstanding value of partnerships in promoting sustainable development, he asserted that in implementing the 2030 Agenda the UN Member States need to preserve and capitalize on the multi-stakeholder nature of the ECOSOC, by connecting key actors from governments, civil society, private sector and academia.
Touching upon the central place of the Council within the international architecture for sustainable development, he added:
„The ECOSOC is just as strong and dynamic as the Member States allow it to be. It is well equipped to help the implementation of the Agenda 2030, and we do not need to reinvent the wheel. What we need is to streamline our efforts and to have a clear division of responsibilities. Doing this is largely in the hands of States and depends on their ability to transpose political will into concrete measures.”
Ambassador Ion Jinga also emphasized that, as an emerging donor of development assistance, Romania is ready to share its significant expertize in the democratic transition, human rights, rule of law and good governance.
