EC official: Romania has huge resources and they are economically untapped

Romania has huge resources and, to some extent, they are economically untapped, Nicola Notaro, head of unit, Directorate-General for Environment, told a specialist conference in Bucharest on Wednesday.

"This is a context in which Romania has huge resources that to a certain extent are economically untapped. There are things that can be done, as and the Romanian nature's jewels are known to the general public outside the communities of environmental activists. There is specific legislation, but there are many implementation problems that cannot be solved only by the people who talk to each other in Brussels, as they have to be discussed with hunters, rural communities, landowners, wherever there are problems. That is why we have drawn up a national plan in an attempt to improve the implementation of the European directives [concerning birds and habitats] and we are now in the first stage of implementing the action plan. The plan will not be a solution to all problems, but there are actions that can be taken and that can help us solve some problems we have encountered with regard to the representatives of Romanian farmers," said Notaro.

The European Landowners' Organisation (ELO) held an annual conference in Bucharest on Wednesday, attended by landowners, land managers, NGOs, as well as national and regional authorities.

Part of the event in Bucharest, the Wildlife Estates Label has expanded its network to include Eastern Europe. The Wildlife Estates Label label has been developed as a means of recognising exemplary management by landowners and land managers in Europe and making them more visible to society as strong nature guards.

The Wildlife Estates network has currently over 270 properties with nearly 1.5 million hectares wearing the label, and the project is steadily growing. The WE label certifies landowners as front-runners of best practices of management, conservation and compliance with the Birds and Habitats European directives, ELO officials say.
