European Commission - first reaction about legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes in Romania

The European Commission says that although cannabis is used for medicinal purposes in some EU member states, additional clinical research and studies are needed to analyze interaction with other medicines , as well as studies meant to observe patients over a longer period of time.

“Cannabis sativa and cannabises are used for medicinal purposes in some EU member states according to the European Observer for drugs and addiction”, says the representative EC office in Romania, on Facebook.

Cannabis is the most used illegal drug in Europe.

“In EU, no country which allows the medicinal use of cannabis recommends smoking it. A report of the European Observer shows that additional clinical research and studies are needed to analyze doses and interaction with other medicines, as well as studies observing patients for a longer period of time,” EC shows.

The EC reaction comes in the context of the announcement made by Finance minister Eugen Teodorovici that cannabis could be legalized and used for medicinal purposes. He added it was not the moment for debates on the use of cannabis for recreation purposes.
