Eurostat: Romania's 2017 healthcare expenditure 5.2 pct of GDP against European average of 9.9 pct
Romania's healthcare expenditure accounted for 5.2 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2017, which is the lowest ratio recorded among the EU Member States, in the context in which the EU average is 9.9 per cent of the GDP, show data published on Tuesday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).
France and Germany are the EU "champions" in this regard, with 11.3 per cent of their GDP spent on healthcare, each. The next highest ratio was witnessed in Sweden (11.0 per cent).
By contrast, healthcare expenditure accounted for less than 7.5 per cent of GDP in 12 Member States, with Romania recording the lowest ratio (5.2 per cent). Just above Romania are Luxembourg (5.5 per cent of GDP), Latvia (6 per cent of GDP), Estonia (6.4 per cent of GDP), and Lithuania (6.5 per cent).
Relative to population size, healthcare expenditure was highest among the EU Member States in Sweden (5,200 euros per inhabitant), Denmark and Luxembourg (5,100 euros per inhabitant, each) in 2017, while it was lowest in Romania (490 euros per inhabitant) and Bulgaria (590 per cent per inhabitant).
