FDI  up almost 1.5 pct in 2017

Last year's foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania amounted to 4.586 billion euro, almost 1.5 pct up from the 4.517 billion euro registered in 2016, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) said in a release on Tuesday.

Of the total FDI inflow, the paid-up equity capital (including the net estimated reinvested profit) amounted to 3.822 million euro and intra-group loans stood at 764 million euro (net). 

The number of newly set up companies running on foreign capital in Romania was by 9.1 pct higher in 2017 compared to 2016, reaching 5,837 businesses with a paid-up capital of more than 40.25 million US dollars, up 0.4 percent YoY, shows data with the National Trade Register Office.

As of end-December the total number of such companies was 215,651, with a total equity capital of over 61.03 billion US dollars. In the ranking by the investors' country of residence, the Netherlands holds the leading position with 12.2 bln dollars and 5,112 companies, followed by Austria with 7.1 billion dollars and 7,391 companies and Germany with 6.6 billion dollars and 22,105 companies. 

In 2016 Romania performed the poorest in the past 18 years as regards newly set up companies running on foreign capital, while 2007 was the best year, with over 15,000 such companies coming into being.
