Government in Chisinau, led by Maia Sandu, was dismissed by Parliament through censure motion

The Moldovan Government led by Maia Sandu, invested just five months ago, has been dismissed on Tuesday by censure motion, with the vote of the Socialist deputies, endorsed by the Democratic Party. The motion has been initiated by the Socialist Party of President Igor Dodon.

The political crisis has kicked off in Chisinau following PM Maia Sandu’s decision to amend the prosecution law, which came against the Socialists’ interests.

The censure motion has passed by 63 votes. The MPs of Sor Party abstained from voting.

I would have liked to do more on the justice reform. I would have liked to have the justice law adopted, but there is no political will for serious things. We’ll continue to work for people, to fight on the barricades Now we have to get rid of the the next ordeal that is shaping and is trying to seize all state institutions We are in favor of the justice reform and the problem was that Igor Dodon and PSRM did not endorse the justice reform. We don’t have nothing to discuss with people who are not endorsing the most important reform”, Maia Sandu said after the vote.

President Klaus Iohannis stated, on Tuesday, that the demarche initiated by the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) to remove the Maia Sandu Government, in an "essential" moment for Justice reform, goes against the medium and long-term interests of the neighboring country and its citizens.

"In the current context, Romania's support, including the financial support, will continue to prioritize the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, and the completion of bilateral strategic projects and will be strictly conditioned by the continuation of essential reforms for the democratic development of the Republic of Moldova and the advancement of its European path," Iohannis explained, in a press statement published by the Presidential Administration.

He added that, in the five months since taking over the mandate, the Government led by Maia Sandu made important progress in implementing the reforms necessary to draw closer to the European Union, with the purpose of promoting the values of democracy and rule of law, in the fight against corruption and ensuring the independence of Justice, as well as in the economic and social domains, reforms meant to ensure the growth of the welfare and security levels of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

According to Iohannis, the Maia Sandu Government managed to re-establish the trust of its development partners, especially the European Union, an essential premise to resume the international political and financial support for the Republic of Moldova.

"Romania firmly expressed support for the efforts of the Government in Chisinau, given the clear and determined commitment of the government coalition for the European path and for the advancement of the bilateral strategic partnership for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. In the period preceding the censure motion, Romania addressed directly, on multiple channels, a firm appeal to the political forces in Chisinau for responsibility and overcoming the political impasse, encouraging the identification of solutions to ensure stability, to continue the reform of Justice and to allow the Government to maintain the European path," Klaus Iohannis added.

În turn, the chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, stated, on Tuesday, that the decision to dismiss by censure motion the Maia Sandu Government raises many questions regarding the further development of the Republic of Moldova and showed that the availability of the Romanian executive to cooperate with a Moldovan Government that does not offer serious guarantees for authentic democracy will be very little.

"We took notice with profound concern of the decision of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to dismiss through censure motion the Maia Sandu Government. The ACUM bloc and the Government led by Maia Sandu represented a guarantee of respecting democracy, individual rights and freedoms of the Republic of Moldova citizens and a guarantee for the process of integration in the European Union started by our brothers across the Prut [River]. The decision to oust the Maia Sandu Government raises many questions regarding the further development of the Republic of Moldova, and in what regards us we will continue any program to support the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, but if we do not have the guarantee of a pro-European Government being invested, which would offer serious guarantees for an authentic democracy in the Republic of Moldova and which would represent the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, our availability to cooperate with a Government that does not offer these guarantees will be very little," said Orban, after the meeting of the PNL Executive Bureau.

He drew the attention of the initiators of the censure motion that "they've started on a path that does not lead to a beneficial destination for the Moldovan citizens."

"We will look very closely at any further step that will be taken in the Republic of Moldova," Orban said.

Chifu: Dodon building pro-Russian regime and accumulating power

Iulian Chifu, the president of the Center for Conflict Prevention, considers that Moldova is in a situation “worse than in the beginning”, in which one of the two parties ensuring majority issued a motion against the other and the government. The motion passed and president Igor Dodon is building a pro-Russian government and accumulating elements of power.

He added that Maia Sandu's government realized that”this concentration of power in the hands of a president who does not have executive attributions,” and at that moment tried to assume responsibility “in order to force the separation of waters” between those who want reform and those who do not want it.

About a possible European evolution of Moldova, Chifu said “it is very complicated at present , when you sanctioned a pro-European party to think that the pro-Russian party that remains and generated the fall will be the one to make reforms and European integration.”

On Tuesday, the Chisinau government, headed by Maia Sandu, was dismissed by Parliament with a no confidence motion adopted with 63 votes, Moldpress, Agora.md and Radio Chisinau inform.

The fall of the government comes five months after the pro-western premier Maia Sandu took over the position  promising to fight corruption, Reuters writes.

The motion against the government was presented on Friday by socialist deputies, governing partners, when the executive assumed responsibility for a project amending the Prosecution Law. The motion,  debated by the plenum in the premier's presence, was backed by MPs from the Socialist Party (PSRM) and by those from the Democratic Party (PDM).
