Iohannis invites Romanian and Bulgarian business people to be partners to the national governments of the two countries

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday said Romania will concentrate on the fight against corruption, pointing out that the country has taken significant steps toward eradicating corruption over the last years.

"As president of Romania, I will keep on supporting the organisations that fight against corruption," Iohannis told the opening of a Romanian-Bulgarian business forum in Sofia.

He invited the attending Romanian and Bulgarian business people to be partners to the national governments of the two countries.

"You can rest assured that we will be your serious and honest partners. The Romanian Government will continue to pass policies for fiscal simplification, cut through red tape, increase transparency and adjust public education to the real needs of the economy, because we are firmly convinced that a business environment that is friendly to entrepreneurs is the key to our countries' partners," said Iohannis.

He also encouraged seeking funding for new bridges of the Danube River.

"When we talk about the development of infrastructure at our common border, we have to work together to identify new funding for more bridges over the Danube River, because developing road and railway infrastructure is not incompatible with the fluvial development of the Danube. (...) We have to deploy more substantial efforts because transport over the Danube is a source of prosperity for our national economies," said Iohannis.

He added that linking together the natural gas transmission pipelines of Romania and Bulgaria will lead to increased energy security for the entire geographical region. "We are convinced that by the end of the year works will also complete on the Giurgiu-Ruse connecting pipeline," said Iohannis.

In his turn, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said Bulgaria's exports to Romania increased seven times over ten years, while Romania's exports to Bulgaria increased six times. "Ours is full respect to the entrepreneurs. You have my respect because your products are competitive," said Plevneliev.

Part of the event, a Bulgarian edition of Iohannis' "Pas cu pas" (Step by Step) book was made available for purchase
