“Repeal and leave!”: Thousands took to the streets in Romania against GEO 7

A new protest against the Justice ministry’ s emergency ordinance to amend the justice laws has been staged in Victoriei Square, Bucharest on Sunday night. Thousands have shouted again their opposition to GEO 7, chanting: “Resignation!”, “Repeal and leave!”, “Justice, not corruption!”. The protest started in Victoriei Square, and after that protesters marched to the Justice Ministry’s HQ.

On their way to the ministry, they chanted “Down with the communism!”, “PSD, the red plague” when they arrived in Universitatii Square. There was also a  moment of silent at the shrine in the square, in the remembrance of the victims of the 1989 Revolution.

“Kovesi, don’t forget, Romania is on your side”, “Romania, a European state”, people also shouted.

Demonstrators asked for the independence of justice, thus joining to the magistrates’ protests in the past week. People also cheered the actors’ previous protest: “Well done, actors!”

Tens of actors have staged a protest on the stairs of the Bucharest National Theatre on Sunday evening, asking for an independent justice system.

Fearing prison, they (e.n. the rulers) are taking the justice into their arms and are amending it to escape prison. It is the time to protest, to prove that we are aware of what is going on and to prove we disagree. This would be the only chance, for everybody to take the stand”, actor Victor Rebengiuc said.

Over 1,000 people also marched in Cluj-Napoca: “Justice, not corruption”, “United we save Romania”, “Nest of thieves and mobsters”. Almost 1,500 took to the streets in Sibiu, chanting: “Criminals, we don’t want you as rulers”. Protests were also staged in Constanta.

People say they will take to the streets until GEO 7 is repealed and the special section for the investigation of magistrates will be disbanded. Protesters have thus joined the magistrates in over 80 courts who have protested in the past days against the latest amendments of justice laws.
