Romania's involvement in promoting regional cooperation highlighted by Corlatean at ASEM

Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean, on the occasion of the ministerial meeting Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) taking place in India highlighted Romania's involvement in promoting regional cooperation as a way of stimulating economic development, offering as an example the success recorded by the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said on Tuesday.

Corlatean headed the Romanian delegation at the 11th ministerial meeting Asia-Europe Meeting that took place in India, New Delhi, on Monday and Tuesday. In this context, the Romanian official mentioned the constant support for the initiative on sustainable development and regional cooperation between the states in the Danube and Mekong river basins, aimed at spreading the good practices and experience gain in certain fields of activity such as water resource management, environment preservation, interconnectivity or cross-border cooperation and announced that Romania will be the host in 2014 of the third seminar of ASEM on this issue.

As regards cyber security, Minister Titus Corlatean mentioned Romania's involvement in the field of combating cyber crime and remained that in October there was signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Romania and the Council of Europe (CoE) regarding the setting up in Bucharest of the new CoE Office to focus on combating cyber crime, a project to include also the promotion at global level of the activities in the field, with the support to be granted by the European Union.

On the sidelines of the ASEM, the head of the Romanian diplomacy had a series of bilateral meeting with Foreign Affairs Ministers from India - Salman Khurshid, Indonesia - Marty M. Natalegawa, Japan - Fumio Kishida, the Republic of Korea - Yun Byung-se, Malaezia - Dato' Sri Anifah Haji Aman, New Zealand - Murray Mc Cully, Singapore - Grace Fu, the Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ASEAN (with the rank of minister) - Le Luong Minh, as well as the heads of national delegations from Vietnam - Ha Kim Ngoc, Thailand - Jullapong Nonsrichai, Mongolia - Gankhuyag Damba and Philippine - Evan P. Garcia.
Moreover, the Romanian minister met the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Borge Brende, as well as a series of Foreign Affairs Minister from the European Union.

Romania participate in the ASEM since January 1 2007. The formal accession of Romania took place on the occasion of the ASEM 7 Summit (Beijing, 2008).
