Romanian food products at International Green Week Berlin Jan 19 - 28

Romania will participate via the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) in the 83rd edition of the International Green Week Berlin running between January 19 - 28 and having Bulgaria as partner country, the relevant ministry announced in a release on Thursday.

According to the source, in Romania's exhibiting area, visitors will be able to treat themselves to Romania-specific Protected Geographical Indication foods, such as Topoloveni plum jam (Arges County), Sibiu salami from the six members of the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers (based in the counties of Bacau, Sibiu, Brasov, Calarasi, Ilfov and in Bucharest), smoked bighead carp fillet from Barsa province (Brasov County).

The Ibanesti white cheese manufactured by the members of the Association for the promotion of Gurghiului Valley (Mures County) traditional products, a foodstuff which has the Protected Designation of Origin status, is also up for tasting for whoever is interested.

Also on display during the Green Week Berlin will be products the documentation of which is in various stages of verification by the European Commission's expert departments: mixed mutton and beef Plescoi sausages (Buzau County), smoked Danube mackerel produced by the members of the Tulcea-based Ro-Pescador Association, and the Saveni yellow cheese offered by the Botosani Producers Association.

Featured in tasting sessions will be another four foods, all of which are awaiting the completion of the documentation for the award of European protected status: the Sibiu 'telemea' cheese of the Sibiu Cheese Producers Association, Hunedoara 'virsli' sausages from the Hunedoara Virsli Product Promotion Association, the Vaideeni cheese of the Vaideeni Farmers Cooperative, and pike roe salad from the Tulcea Ro-Pescador Association.

"The members of the associations affiliated to the local branches of the National Federation of Traditional Producers will offer visitors the opportunity to taste foods from various regions of Romania, such as dairy products: cheese, smoked and unsmoked yellow cheese, 'telemea' white cheese, artisanal membrane- or fir bark-wrapped cheese (the so called 'burduf' cheese), smoked and unsmoked soft cheese. Meat products are also on display: pork or sheep sausages, smoked bacon, smoked pork ribs, smoked tenderloin, 'ghiudem' dry raw sausage, 'babic' spicy sausage, home-made sausages, smoked riblets, smoked fish, bacon and onion stew, browned crispy lardons, pork sausages, larded meat, slow-roasted tenderloin, as well as bakery and confectionery products (royal dough cake, Macinului Treasure dough cake, potato bread, braided bread on tray. The rich assortment of fish products includes fisherman's fillet baton, smoked stockfish, Transylvanian trout, fishers' pastrami, carp or pike roe, marinated mackerel in spicy oil, smoked dried catfish, catfish pastrami, everything accompanied by spirits such as palinka, Arges plum brandy and Zetea plum brandy from Mediesul aurit, white and red wines," the MADR release said.

In addition, the guests of the fair are invited to enjoy delicacies such as bitter cherry, strawberry, cherry, raspberry or plum jam; roasted vegetable spread and vegetable stew, but also the famous Leleasca dried plums and Voinesti apples.

The traditional Romanian sewn motifs embedding Oltenia and Crisana specific ethnography and folklore elements will decorate the MADR stand creating a typical Romanian traditional rural atmosphere. As of 2017 the Romanian blouse - 'ia' - is part of the UNESCO cultural heritage, the release mentions. For the first time at an international fair, MADR representatives will present at the stand 16 products out of the 30 entered in the National Mountain Products Register: KOP natural apple juice, KOP natural pear juice, KOP natural apple and red beet juice, natural apple juice, natural pear juice, mixed natural apple and pear juice, honey from Caras Severin County, Ibanesti yellow cheese and sour cream, Ibanesti whey cheese - Mures County, Valdostana farmhouse cheese, Valdostana bark-wrapped cheese from Prahova County, sana cultured milk, yoghurt and kefir from Harghita County, the cited source notes.
