Statistics: Women stand for over half of Romania's population

Of the 19.414 million people who on January 1, 2020 had their regular residence on the territory of Romania for at least 12 months, 9.914 million were women, representing 51.1pct of the total resident population, according to a National Institute of Statistics (INS) press release issued on Monday.

In the urban environment, the share of women in Romania is more pronounced than in the rural one; over 5.471 million women live in the city, accounting for 52.3pct of the total urban population.

The female population is "older" than the male population by 3.3 years. This in a context where the national average age is 42.1 years, the average female age is 43.7 years, and the average male age is 40.4 years.

Most elderly women live in rural areas (50.5pct of all women aged 65 and over).

Women between the ages of 15 and 49 numbered 4.340 million people, with potential mothers representing 43.8pct of the total female population residing on January 1, 2019.

In 2018, the average age of the mother at birth (28.7 years) and at first birth (27.4 years) was slightly higher compared to the previous year (28.5 years and 27.2 years respectively), maintaining the tendency to postpone giving birth.

Women in rural areas continued to give birth at a younger age (27.2 years) compared to those in urban areas (29.9 years). The gap between urban and rural is also maintained in the case of the age of mothers who are at first birth (28.9 years in urban and 25.0 years in rural).

The life expectancy at birth of women in 2018 was 79.38 years (80.16 years in urban and 78.38 years in rural).

Regarding the participation of the population in the economic activity, the most recent data, respectively for the third quarter of 2019, shows that the employed population was 8.766 million people; of these, women accounted for 42.8pct.

Regarding the degree of education, out of the total number of women employed, 25.7pct were graduates of higher education, 4.4pct of post-secondary education, 41.2pct graduated high school, and 12.1pct vocational schools.
