Agriculture: Foodstuff exports to Arab countries have grown by 70%

Romania is trying to open new markets for foodstuff exports, with a 70% growth for trade with Arab countries, said the minister of agriculture Daniel Constantin at the conference Mediafax Talks about Agriculture.

“2014 was a very good year for agriculture and the second year in a row with positive balance sheet. In 2013 the excess was over 300 million euros, while in 2014 it was over 500 million euros” the minister said.

Cereals, especially wheat ranked first for export. 4.9 million tonnes of wheat out of a total of 7.4 million tonnes were exported. According to Constantin, the necessary of wheat in the domestic market was estimated at 2.5-4 million tonnes.

“We opened new markets in the Eastern area and in Arab countries where exports have grown by 70% lately,” he added.

Romania ranked 5th in EU for wheat yield, first for sunflower yield, 2nd for corn and 4th for rape.

“Politics and financing brought us here. Most important financing comes from EU - 2.5 billion euros in 2012, 2.9 billion in 2013 and 3.3 billion euros in 2014”.
