Agriculture: Hugh Beirne, Avalon Comp: Investors in agribusiness will keep coming to Romania
for which Romania continues to be interesting for foreign agribusiness investors.
According to the National Statistics Institute, 63% of the 238,000 sq.km representing the whole country is tillable land, where wheat and corn mostly grow.
Romania has a large farming area and is strategically located in Europe, a reason for which investors in agribusiness will continue coming here, according to Hugh Beirne, manager and co-owner of Avalon Comp.
Romanian companies and market continue to be attractive for investors. With an ample source of food produced locally, farmers who deal with animal husbandry will keep investing, according to the entrepreneur who was behind the 50 million euro transaction by which the Irish group Origin Enterprises, with annual incomes of 1.4 billion euros took over last year, businesses Redoxim Timisoara and Comfert Bacau, specialised in the distribution of agricultural inputs.
The largest companies with foreign investments in agriculture which opened businesses in Romania - Cargill, Ameropa, Expur -carry out their activity mostly in the trending area - they buy raw materials from Romanian farmers and export them to other countries. However, there are foreign investors, like the Chinese from Smithfield, the largest pork meat processor in the world, with integrated production system, who have 52 active farms and their own slaughterhouse in Timis and Arad counties.
