Cars: APIA: New vehicle registrations, down 23pct in August 2024 

 New vehicle registrations in Romania fell by 23% in August 2024, year-on-year, while the green vehicle segment declining 16%, of which full electric vehicles by 69%, according to statistics published on Thursday by the Association of Romania's Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

August 2024 witnessed a 24.5% decrease in new vehicle registrations, year-on-year, and a 27.2% decline on a monthly basis

In terms of market share, the SUV segment was in poll position, with 52.3% of the total (down 10% year-on-year), followed by the C-Class - with a share of 28.7% (-24.2%) and the B-Class - 11.6% share (-36.3%).

By type of fuel, gasoline engines plus mild hybrids decreased by 21.9% to a 63.7% share.

For cars equipped with diesel engines, plus mild hybrids, the decrease was 44.9% and the market share was 7.8%.

On the other hand, full electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, as well as full hybrids had a market share of 28.5% in the eighth month of 2024, which exceeds by 20.7 percentage points the share held by diesel engines, with the latter also including mild hybrid diesel engines.

The top three best-selling full electric vehicles were the Tesla Model 3 - with 168 units and an increase of 33%, in August 2024 as against August 2023, the Tesla Model Y (47 units, -87%) and the Hyundai Kona (32 units).

In the category of plug-in electric vehicles, the ranking was topped by the Hyundai Tucson - with 111 units and an increase of 236%, followed by the Toyota RAV4 (46 units, - 15%) and the Volkswagen Golf (29 units).

At the same time, as far as the ranking of hybrid vehicles without recharging from external sources is concerned, theToyota Corolla was in first place in the August 2024 rankings, with 308 units (+35.7% as against August 2023), then the Honda CR-V (164 units) and the Toyota RAV4 (149 units, +14.6%).

Official statistics reveal that light commercial vehicles and minibuses registered in August 2024 were down 20.7% year-on-year, of which light commercial vehicles without minibuses recorded a decrease of 18.5%. Over the entire period of the year, compared to the same period last year, registrations of light commercial vehicles increased by 30.9%.
