Healthcare: Health card, electronic prescriptions compulsory starting Jan. 1

The health card and the electronic prescriptions have become compulsory in Romania starting Jan. 1.

The card is a personal instrument aimed to identify the patient in the national health insurance system and it allows repayment of the actual medical services made by the system.

The card is mandatory starting Jan. 1 for all the Romanian citizens aged over 18 and it shall contain the owner's identification data, namely their name, the single insured person's code (made up of 20 digits and being different from the individual's personal identification number) as well as the medical information about the owner.

The card will allow identifying the quality of an insured person, thus certifying the correct use of the health insurance fund for the patient having received medical care as well as the personal GPs' and emergency doctors' access to a range of the patients' vital risk medical data.

Furthermore, the GPs shall have to prescribe the medication in electronic format only.

The electronic prescription has been introduced as of July 1, 2012 and it has functioned at the same time with the classical one.
