Healthcare: Romania’s OTC market, up by almost 19 pc in 2017

The Romanian OTC market, including non-prescription medicines, food supplements and medical devices for personal care, registered an increase of 18.8 percent in 2017, compared to the previous year and 14.8 percent in the last quarter of the year, compared to the previous one, according to Cegedim data, RASCI – Romanian Association of the Self-Care Industry – informs in a press release

Thus, the total value of the OTC market segment amounted to RON 858 million in Q4 2017, while at the level of 2017, it recorded total sales of RON 3.104 billion.

In the last quarter of last year, the highest increases were recorded by vitamins, minerals and supplements – 22.2 percent, followed by products for gastrointestinal disorders – 20.9 percent, increases which are found in the full year 2017: 23.9 percent and 21.6 percent, respectively.

As sales volume and market share, the products for cold, flu and allergies rank first in Q4 of 2017 – RON 211.2 million and 24.6 percent. Lifestyle OTC segment is next with RON 180.9 million and 21.1 percent.

At the opposite end, the dermatological category declined from the previous quarter from RON 77.1 million in sales and market share of 10.4 percent in Q3, to sales of RON 57 million and 6.6 percent share market in the last quarter.

For the whole year 2017, the dominating categories were Lifestyle OTC, with total sales of RON 689.5 million and a market share of 22.2 percent, followed closely by colds, flu and allergies products, with RON 666.3 millions in sales volumes and market share of 21.5 percent.
