Lagarde (IMF): Energy market liberalisation will show results on long term

Romania has done very much as concerns the energy sector and the energy market, however painful it may seem on short term, it will show results on long term, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Tuesday, at the National Bank of Romania (BNR) headquarters.

She appreciated what Romania has done as concerns the energy and natural gas sector and the energy liberalisation, finding that however painful this process may seem on short term, it will show results on long term. There are also other reforms that can encourage competitiveness for Romania to register a higher growth.

According to her, the improvement of the investment climate, which should be directed not only to the private sector, means the improvement in Romania's capacity of efficiently using the EU funds, of employing them in due time, with a good governance, to pay results and to adjust the funding needs with the expenses made.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Tuesday talked about the economic developments in Romania and in Eastern Europe, in a conference on the topic 'Eastern Europe and Romania: The Road Ahead,' hosted by the National Bank of Romania.

Christine Lagarde payed a visit to Romania in the period July 15-16, this being her first visit to Bucharest after her appointment as IMF Managing Director, in July 2011
