Romania, Turkey sign memorandum on electric energy transport
Minister-delegate for Energy Constantin Nita and Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the development of interconnections in the electric energy sector, which will allow the setting up of an alternative facility for the exchange of electricity between the two countries, including via a submarine cable, the Economy Ministry informs in a release.
The two ministers approached the latest developments in the energy sectors of the two countries, regional cooperation topics and the strategic interconnection projects, the release reads.
'The regional cooperation is essential for the economic growth and the regional development. To this end, Romania restates its commitment as regards the development of the interconnection networks with the Republic of Moldova, Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria, with a view to beefing up the energy security and generating opportunities for the export of energy in the region. At the same time, the cooperation with Turkey is an important element for Romania's energy sector, considering the capitalization on the export potential. For this purpose, I discussed with my Turkish counterpart E.S. Taner Yildiz, about possible interconnection projects,' Constantin Nita said.
The Romanian minister also referred to the Romania - Turkey submarine cable, a project of pan-European interest, 'that has a significant contribution to the development of the regional electricity market, with a view to its integration to the EU market, a solution for the export of energy on the Turkish market and the surrounding markets.'
