Average gross nominal earnings decline 1.4pct in August, to RON 1,534
In August 2012, the average gross nominal earnings in Romania were RON 2117, by 1.4 percent less than in the previous month, while the average net nominal earnings were RON 1,534, having decreased by RON 22 (-1.4 percent) from the previous month, according to data released on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The highest values of the average net nominal earnings were recorded in computer programming, consultancy and related activities, including information service activities (RON 3,753), while the lowest in accommodation and food service activities (RON 857).
The real earnings index for August 2012 as against the previous month, calculated as the ratio between the net nominal earnings index and the consumer prices index, was 98.1 percent. Compared with October 1990, the real earnings index was 119.8 percent, by 2.4 percentage points lower than the one recorded in July 2012. Fluctuations in earnings were recorded during the year, mainly determined by the payment of annual premiums and holiday bonuses (December, March/April). These are influencing the increases or decreases depending on the period they are granted, finally leading to smoothing the fluctuations in monthly earnings at the level of the whole year.
In August 2012, in the majority of activities belonging to the economic sector the level of the average net earnings was lower as against previous month, when occasional bonuses (including holiday bonuses), amounts from the net profit and other funds (including meal tickets), payments in kind were granted or higher production or receipts (depending on contracts) were achieved.
Also, the decrease in the average net earnings was caused by production failures or lower receipts (depending on contracts), financial difficulties and lack of orders that confronted some business units
