Deputy PM Birchall attended Volodymyr Zelensky's inauguration

Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birchall participated on Monday in Kiev in the inauguration ceremony of Ukraine's President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom she also had a bilateral meeting, the government said in a release.

Deputy Prime Minister and acting Minister of Justice Ana Birchall attended on Monday the meeting of Ukraine's Supreme Rada where the President took the oath of office, and in the solemn reception for the heads of foreign delegations dedicated to the inauguration of the President of Ukraine.

On this occasion Ana Birchall had a bilateral meeting with the new President of Ukraine, whom she congratulated on behalf of Romania's President, Prime Minister, Government and people on his election to Ukraine' top position and wished him success in fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him by the Ukrainian people.

"I am honored to convey the most sincere congratulations to Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, President-elect of Ukraine, and to wish him success in fulfilling his presidential mandate. I reiterated our strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders," said the Romanian official.

According to Birchall, strengthening security in the Black Sea region is a common goal. "We equally want to capitalize on our countries' cooperation potential," added the Deputy Prime Minister.

The Romanian official also approached the situation of the rights of the Romanian minority in Ukraine, underlining the minorities' role as bonding bridges between the two countries. The two officials highlighted the importance of identifying solutions regarding the rights of Romanian ethnics in Ukraine, the cited source said.

On the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony Ana Birchall had bilateral meetings with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay and US Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

During the meeting with Turkey's Vice President, the Romanian official conveyed the message of Prime Minister Viorica Dancila regarding the importance of deepening and strengthening the strategic partnership, especially on the economic dimension, reiterating the interest in the organization of the 27th Meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission.

At the meeting with US Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Ana Birchall reiterated the Prime Minister's message on the special importance Romania attaches to strengthening the transatlantic relationship, an increasingly relevant partnership in the context of the current political, economic and security challenges. She also emphasized that security and energy diversity are priorities during Romania's term at the Presidency of the Council of the EU and common concerns on both sides of the Atlantic.

"The BRUA project is a very good example of the successful cooperation between the states in our region. At the same time it carries an important potential of creating a valuable link between the Southern Gas Corridor and Central Europe, with Romania acting as a regional energy hub," said the Romanian official.

On the sidelines of the Ukrainian President's inaugural ceremony, the Romanian Deputy Prime Minister had bilateral talks with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and with the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ogtay Asadov, where she asserted the goal of the Romanian Government to develop and strengthen Romania's partnership relations with the two states, particularly from the economic point of view, the release also states.
