Foreign Ministry confirms Iulian Buga could be next ambassador to US

The Foreign Ministry confirms that diplomat Iulian Buga was nominated to be Romania’s ambassador to Washington. He will be hear by the foreign policies commissions of the Parliament soon. Bradusa Predescu, the spokesperson for the ministry confirmed on Thursday, at a press conference, that Buga was nominated to occupy the position in Washington.

 

Career diplomat Iulian Buga, Romania’s former ambassador to Ireland, is the nomination sent to president Traian Basescu for the position of Romania’s ambassador to the US, official sources told Mediafax on Sunday.

 

President Traian Basescu declared on Monday about the ambassadors proposed by the Foreign Ministry for Washington and Moscow, Iulian Buga and Vasile Soare that the Presidency had discussed and decided with the ministry to send them to their posts before the initiation of the procedure.

 

Iulian Buga was recently called back from the position of ambassador to Ireland which he had occupied since 2009. He was secretary of state in the Foreign Ministry between 2007-2009, ambassador to the Netherlands between 2001-2007 and he coordinated the North America Department in the Foreign Ministry between 1999-2001.At the same time Iulian Buga held the position of Romania’s general consul to Los Angeles between 1997-1998, while between 1994-1997 he was councilor at the Embassy in Washington. n 2007 he was nominated for the position of ambassador to Washington by former foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu but president Basescu did not accept the nomination at that time.
