Iohannis, in Salzburg: Top priority - finalisation of Brexit agreement, finding solutions to divergent aspects

The top priority is the finalisation of the Brexit agreement as soon as possible and the finding of solutions regarding the divergent aspects, on Ireland, in particular, President Klaus Iohannis said, during his participation in the European Council's informal meeting in Salzburg, Wednesday through Thursday, Agerpres correspondent reports.

President Klaus Iohannis reiterated the importance of maintaining the EU 27 unity and continuing the single voice negotiations with the purpose of closing a proper, equitable agreement with the United Kingdom. Romania's President also brought to mind the necessity to identify ways of continuing cooperation with the UK, considering that the latter and the European Union share joint objectives at international level, the Presidential Administration reads, in a release.

Klaus Iohannis added that the migration's external dimension, through the enhancement of cooperation with the third partner states, remains in our country's vision, as essential pillar that contributes to the implementation of durable solutions to answering the pressure determined by the illegal migration, the said release says.

The President emphasised Romania's support for the measures aiming at the consolidation of the EU's external borders.

As for the European asylum policy, President Iohannis reassured our country's support for the furthering of the talks regarding the Dublin system's reform, of a manner capable to reflect the principles of solidarity and responsibility for the benefit of all of the member states, yet maintaining the voluntary character of each relocation form.

President Klaus Iohannis underlined the special attention Romania is giving to the cooperation inside the EU and with the international partners in cyber-security. Moreover, he stressed the significance of the actions at EU level in the direction of combating misinformation and the fake news, as well as of promoting an integrated approach at European level, of the nature to strengthen the EU citizens' confidence in the EU's security space.

President Iohannis also stated that the European Commission's standpoint with respect to the Frontex mandate is correct.

"The Commission came with a proposal we basically believe it's fair. Frontex does a good job and I like to bring to mind that Romania is very much involved in Frontex, but we need more, which means that we must think maybe to grow the Frontex team and stipulate clearer responsibilities for it in combating illegal migration and along the external borders of the Union," stated Iohannis, when asked about Romania's standpoint with respect to the prolongation of the Frontex mandate.
