PNL's Antonescu: USL no longer exists

The Social Liberal Union (USL) no longer exists, national leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu said Tuesday evening.

'This is a decision that garnered an overwhelming vote, but it is a decision that was not easy to take. This is a decision we did not want, which we tried to avoid. USL no longer exists, because it had no more reason to exist,' Antonescu told a press conference at Parliament Palace.

The Standing Delegation of the National Liberal Party (PNL) on Tuesday passed a four-point resolution that includes PNL pulling out of the Government and campaigning for the dismissal from office of Prime Minister Victor Ponta, according to sources with the party.

The sources mentioned that the document also proposes the dismissal of all PNL ministers and state secretaries.

Former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu at the end of the meeting of National Liberal Party's (PNL) Standing Delegation said he voted against withdrawing from the Government, arguing it is 'a slightly hasty attitude.'

'I personally did not vote for withdrawing from government, I voted against, but it was a long meeting, there were not very interesting debates, an expeditious solving was rather sought. I believe it is a tough decision, a complicated decision that should have been better analysed, better considered. I believe it is a slightly hasty (...) decision, I do not want to use some qualifiers that might disturb my colleagues, because I believe each one of us has the right to his/her own option, for which we should not be judged in any way,' Tariceanu said.

As far as he was concerned, he said he would think about 'what is left to be done.'

PNL decided to withdraw from Government

National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Crin Antonescu on Tuesday announced that the Liberals, in the Standing Delegation meeting, decided to withdraw from the Government.

'It is a decision made by an overwhelming vote, but it is a decision that was not easy to make, it is a decision we did not want, it is a decision we tried to avoid making,' Antonescu said.

'We found it honest, fair not to prolong a festival of hypocrisy and to have the courage ourselves to find what is most certainly true and namely that the Social Liberal Union no longer exists, because it had no more reason to exist,' he added.

The National Liberal Party (PNL) asks for Prime Minister Victor Ponta's resignation, Liberal chairman Crin Antonescu said on Tuesday.

'Victor Ponta got his nomination and subsequent appointment as prime minister heading a USL [Social Liberal Union] Government,' Antonescu claimed at the Parliament Palace.

He added that Ponta will probably not resign.

Liberal ministers to resign by Wednesday noon

Liberal ministers and other officials will submit their resignations by 12 p.m. local time, the National Liberal Party (PNL) chairman Crin Antonescu declared on Tuesday night.

'Our ministers have practically announced their resignations from the political point of view. Tomorrow by 12 o'clock all the [Liberal] officials, state secretary and holders of equivalent positions will legally file their resignations at the Government,' Antonescu said.

PNL to use opposition 'political weapon' - motion of censure

National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Crin Antonescu claims that the Liberals will use, from the opposition, the motion of censure against the Government, a procedure which they consider to be 'the prime parliamentary weapon.'

'The motion of censure is an important weapon; it is actually the prime parliamentary weapon for an opposition party. Have no doubt about PNL - the only opposition party, if we are to be in opposition, able to reach this weapon - using this opposition political weapon,' Antonescu declared at the Parliament on Tuesday night.
