Azomures resumes partial production

Azomures Plant in Targu Mures partially resumed fodder production. “We partially resumed fodder production. About 10% of the usual production. We used ammonia imported from a European country where gas price is lower. Thus we started nitric acid installation (intermediate product) and an ammonium nitrate one (fodder).

Installations will work for a few days, then they will pause for a few days for the ammonia supply. Then we resume production at 10% level. According to economic conditions of gas – fodder prices, we will make decisions for the following week,” said Ovidiu Maior, spokesman for Azomures plant in Targu Mures.

In October 2022, Hari Kiiski, former Azomures CEO told Profit Energy.forum that for the then quotations for chemical fodder, the main raw material – natural gas, should cost under 90 euros/MWh to be profitable, the then price being 200 euros/MWh at the Dutch stock exchange.

Azomures, the largest natural gas industrial consumer in Romania, temporarily suspended ammonia production at the end of 2022 dure to the high natural gas price. It was for the second time when the Targu Mures industrial unit made such a decision, the first one being at the end of 2021.

Azomures is the most important fodder manufacturer for agriculture in Romania. It also supplies raw materials (urea and melamine) to several industrial units in Romania. The annual production (in normal conditions) is 1.6 million tons of fooder, about 75% of production going to Romanian farms. Azomures is part of the Swiss group Ameropa, one of the biggest world fodder and cereal traders.
