Statistics: Women's pay was 7 percent smaller than the men's pay in 2014

Women's pay in Romania was 7 percent smaller, on the average, than the men's pay in 2014, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS). 

"The average monthly net pay in the Romanian economy was 1,697 lei. In 2014, the real wage gain index (the nominal net wage gain to the consumer price index) was 131.2 percent the level of 1990, up 7.8 percentage points from the year before, and also up 0.9 percentage points from 2008. On the average, women's pay was nearly 7 percent less than men's pay, with average monthly gross wage income of 2,234 lei (compared with men's 2,412 lei) and an average net monthly wage income of 1,627 lei (against men's 1,761 lei). Against the average in the economy, the women's net monthly wage income was 95.9 percent of the all employees' pay,' says INS. 

A breakdown by counties of the average net wage income shows it smaller than the average in the economy in 36 counties. The lowest level, of 1,251 lei, was reported in Harghita County, while the highest was recorded in Bucharest City (2,441 lei). The average monthly labour costs stood at 2,988 lei per employee in 2014, up 6.2 percent from the year before. The weight of direct spending in the total workforce costs was 78.5 percent. 

According to INS, the average number of the employed increased by 64,100 people in 2014, reaching 4.507 million persons. 

"A breakdown by economic sectors shows that most of the employed were in the tertiary sector (services), 61.1 percent in 2014. In the secondary sector (industry and construction) 36.5 percent of the workforce was employed, while the primary sector (agriculture, forestry and aquaculture) employed just 2.4 percent. Average gross monthly income was 2,328 lei in 2014, up 7.6 percent from the previous year," according to INS.
