Average budget of Romanians for winter celebrations, on the rise this year, to 1,660 lei (study)

Romanians from urban areas allocate this year, an average of 1,660 RON for the Winter celebrations budget, on the rise from approximately 1,590 lei last year, the greatest amount of the money will be spent, this time too, on food, according to a study carried out by a research company and sent on Thursday.

"The overall budget (both for Christmas and New Year's Eve) allocated for Winter celebrations this year is estimated at 1,660.87 lei. Thus, almost three quarters of urban residents will spend between 1,000 and 3,000 lei for Christmas and New Year's Eve, while 17.9 percent of these will only dispose of a sum smaller than 1,000 lei," the quoted study shows.

According to the document, a significant part of the budget for the winter holidays will be destined for food and non-food products.

Thus, urban residents will spend on average 649.25 lei for food products (meat, christmas sweetbread, etc.) and 430.43 lei for non-food products (clothing, footwear, cosmetics, decorations etc).

"Moreover, 564.69 lei is the average budget allocated for the winter holidays by urban residents for gifts to the loved ones. Respondents who chose to spend this period traveling will pay for these excursions 784.22 lei and for going out the average sum allocated will be of 287.89 lei," highlights the study "Shopping for the winter holidays" carried out by MEDNET Marketing Research Center.

This year too, the percentage of people who intend to offer gifts for the Winter celebrations holds steady at 90 percent.

As regards New Year's Eve 2017, 80.9 percent of respondents intend to spend it in the country, and only 2 percent will go abroad, and 4 percent of urban residents will work on New Year's Eve.

"Out of those staying in the country for New Year's Eve, 78.3 percent will spend it with family/friends in their own homes or their friends', 11.4 percent will go to restaurants/clubs and 8 percent will spend it in a mountain resort.

The percentage of those going outside (Central Place/University Square etc) at midnight is of 2.3 percent, the aforementioned document reads.

The study was carried out on a representative sample at a national urban level (small towns — below 30,000 residents, medium towns 30,000 to 100,000 residents, big towns — over 100,000 residents) between November 23-28 2016. 800 people were interviewed, the age range of respondents was between 18 and 65 years old. The margin of error of the study was -3.46 percent.
