BTA: Bulgaria and Romania reached an agreement on easing cross-border traffic

The Bulgarian vice-minister of transport and communications, Nikolai Naidenov and the first collaborator with the Romanian Embassy to Bulgaria, Bogdan Tebrean reached an agreement on easing cross-border traffic, announced on Thursday the Bulgarian ministry, quoted by BTA.

The officials discussed ways to facilitate the crossing through the Bulgarian-Romanian border crossing points, especially in the summer, analyzed the technical state of the infrastructure and considered setting up a ferry service between Ruse and Giurgiu. The meeting took place at the initiative of Minister of Transport and Communications Nikolai Sabev.

Naidenov proposed that only the Bulgarian party get border control for the future ferry line Ruse-Giurgiu, so that the service be launched immediately.

Tebrean attributed bottlenecks in cross-border traffic to a 250% increase in heavy truck traffic compared to last year and a stricter control of migrants.

Discussing about the construction of several bridges between Bulgaria and Romania to cross the Danube, Naidenov said that this is an option to minimize the concentration of trucks at cross-border points. He reiterated the Bulgarian opinion that feasibility studies for new bridges should be made simultaneously in five localities.

At present, the Bulgarian and Romanian Danube banks are connected through two bridges and three ferry lines.
