Canadian ForMin Melanie Joly starts today a visit to Romania

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly is paying an official visit to Romania on Monday, at the invitation of Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu.

On this occasion, Melanie Joly will be received at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace by President Klaus Iohannis.

Political consultations are scheduled between Bogdan Aurescu and his Canadian counterpart also on Monday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the invitation to visit Romania was extended during the telephone conversation of the two ministers on February 12 and reiterated on the occasion of the meeting on February 20, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, the visit being carried out as a follow-up of the discussions within the framework of the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting and the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, which took place on Friday in Brussels.

In terms of the bilateral dimension, the ministers will refer to marking the celebration of the 55 years of uninterrupted relations between Romania and Canada in 2022 and to the need to capitalize on the potential of bilateral cooperation, with a strategic character, on all its dimensions, the MAE says.

The heads of the two diplomacies will have a substantial exchange of views on the developments generated by the Russian military aggression against Ukraine and its humanitarian and security consequences and will discuss the efficient and coherent management of the humanitarian crisis, through the prompt involvement of European institutions, EU member states and other like-minded partners such as Canada, the United Kingdom or the United States.

At the same time, ministers Aurescu and Joly will emphasize the need for close transatlantic cooperation on all relevant dimensions in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
