Cristian Diaconescu, proposed by Romania for the position of secretary-general of OSCE
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is one of the largest regional organizations, and Romania, over the years, had a very serious experience, including from the political-diplomatic perspective, in what regards regional cooperation, stated, on Thursday, Cristian Diaconescu, former Foreign Minister, first deputy chair of the People's Movement Party (PMP), proposed by Romania to occupy the position of secretary-general of OSCE.
He emphasized that the position of Secretary General of the OSCE is international, perspective from which Romania's contribution at this level can be discussed.
"On one hand, it consists of the way in which dialogue is had, the way in which Romanian experience will count in what regards the values that are shared in OSCE and, not least, Romania's experience in what regards regional cooperation. Practically, the OSCE is one of the largest regional organizations, and Romania, along the years, had a very serious experience, including from a political-diplomatic perspective, in what regards regional cooperation. (...) We have experience from this point of view and obviously Romania wants to make it available to the entire OSCE space," Diaconescu indicated.
"We are discussing security matters, economic and environment issues and humanitarian ones. Secondly, it's an organization that brings together to the negotiating table the Euro-Atlantic space and the Eurasian space, with application from Vancouver to Vladivostok, and has in implementation process a series of agreements and treaties, especially in conventional arms control and measures to increase trust and security, which were convened on immediately after the end of the Cold War," Diaconescu mentioned.
He said that the designation of the Secretary General of the OSCE (position for which Helga Maria Schmid, incumbent secretary-general of the European External Action Service, proposed by Germany - e.n.) will take place at the beginning of December, act which will be formalized by the OSCE Ministerial Council.
