Cristian Paun: I don't think we can lower inflation more than two figures this year
University professor Cristian Paun declared on Monday, at Prima News TV that he did not think we could lower inflation under two figures this year and that probably 2022 ended with 17%, that is 2% above BNR estimates.
Professor Paun said about a 10% inflation that from his point of view it was no longer valid, as it was valid when the National Bank came with a prognosis of 15% for the beginning of 2023 and the end of 2022.
“We expect December data as November has already knocked all calculations down. In November we had 16.7% and December will add a little something to that figure, so perhaps 2022 ended with 17%, that is 2% over BNR estimates,” Cristian Paun said.
The professor showed that the government counted on the lower level of that variation and the most optimistic prediction started from 15%.
“It is no longer 15%, it is 17% and I don't think we should choose the most optimistic one. In my opinion, I don't think we will be able to have an inflation under two figures this year. A few minor errors have already been made, the year starts with 10% salary increases in the budget sector. I think it would have been better to go with 5% and grant the other 5% in second half of the year.”
Paun mentioned that “the main aid was that of increasing pensions, allowances, minimum salaries. “The government places the whole inflation burden on pensioners, as inflation is now higher,” the professor added.
“This aid granted in economy must be well targeted and balanced because it can trigger inflation – incomes or inflation – salaries, we increase incomes because inflation is higher,” Paun said.
