Endeavour for the inscription of the Martisor practice on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The Romanian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on UNESCO is voicing readiness to provide the necessary expertise and organisational support to the cross border diplomatic endeavour for the inscription of the Martisor practice on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In a press statement, Chairman Traian Igas says Bulgaria, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova and Romania have nominated Cultural practices associated to the first of March for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In 2015, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee examined the nominations and decided to send them back to the three countries.

"Romania as well as the other countries deploying this endeavour will have to come up with further completions as soon as possible for the finalisation of the inscription procedure. The Romanian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on UNESCO will work together with all the national and international organisations for the recognition and preservation of this spring beginning custom handed down from the Antiquity to make and wear a martisor, twisted red and white threads, as a charm," reads the statement.
