EP President Antonio Tajani starts today a visit to Bucharest

The meeting of the European Parliament Conference of Presidents with the Romanian gov't in the perspective of Romania's taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union is scheduled for Wednesday, at the Victoria Palace, according to the Romanian Executive.

The event will be attended by Prime minister Viorica Dancila, the members of the Romanian gov't, European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, EP Secretary General Klaus Welle and the leaders of the nine political groups with the EP.

European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani, says he is a friend of Romania, one day before arriving on a visit to Bucharest, speaks about joining the Schegen area and about the close relations our country has with Italy.

In an interview for ‘Advarul’ newspaper, Antonio Tajani says Italians are sincere friends for Romanians, blood relatives, part of the European family of Latin origin and that he understands Romanian language. “Translators are glad, they can take a day off,” Tajani says

The EP President regrets that Romania hasn’t been more active in terms of accessing European funds. “We have to admit that Romanian authorities did not know how to capitalize this chance. The European funds are a huge chance, they could modernize the economy and could open opportunities for young Romanians and their remarkable capacity to work and innovate,” he said.

On the other hand, Antonio Tajani says Romania has met for many years the technical criteria to join the Schengen space.

“The European Parliament was and will always be supporter of Romania in this endeavor. I launch an appeal to the Member States that block Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, to give up the resistance. The benefits of Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area are for everyone, including for the states already members of the Schengen space.” the EP President wrote for ‘Adevarul.’
