European Commission: Romania must decide what specific measures it adopts to reduce budget deficit
Romania must decide what specific measures it adopts to reach budget deficit targets, according to an answer sent by a spokesperson of the European Commission, upon Economedia request.
Economedia asked EC which were the main discussion topics and the general conclusions of meetings held between Romanian ministers and European officials, about fiscal measures, the budget deficit target, renegatiation of PNRR and the possibility of moving some delayed projects from PNRR to the Cohesion Policy.
A Commission spekesman conveyed there were “constant, in depth and constructive exchanges with Romanian authorities about putting in application Romania's recovery and resilience plan, in order to place pulic finances of the country on a sustainable trajectory”, and that European officials would not reveal the content of those talks.
As part of recommendations addressed to Romania in the spring package of the European semester, issued on May 24, 2023, the Commission proposed that Romania ahould apply fiscal policies according to the Council Recommendation of June 18,2021, with a view to eliminating the excessive public deficit in Romania and the consolidation of the country's foreign position.
According to the Commission, the budget execution for the first part of 2023 was difficult, which suggests that some consolidation measures will be needed to reach the global deficit objective for 2023.
According to the European official, in spring 2024 the Commission will evaluate data about the 2023 execution and will decide about possible stages within the excessive deficit procedure.
