Foreign Ministry official: We expect to have clear accession Schengen perspective
Romania expects to have a “clear perspective” of joining the Schengen area, the secretary of state for European Affairs, Iulia Matei conveyed on Tuesday, in a joint press statement with her French counterpart, Clement Beaune.
“We talked about Schengen and Romania's accession to the Schengen area. We restated Romania's expectation that a favorable decision about joining the Schengen area should be made as soon as possible, considering that Romania fulfills all accession criteria and the pandemic crisis showed us how important it is to have an efficient Schengen area, without fragmentation and which should turn to account the real contribution of participating states by a series of mechanisms which belong to European cooperation from the perspective of Internal Affairs, such as Romania,” Matei said.
In his turn, the French official spoke about the importance that every country of the area should consolidate it.
“We will work in a spirit of border security, we are speaking about Schengen and I know how important this topic is for Romania, but we wish to build together, as broadening the Schengen area does not mean making it fragile, but every country that joins the area does nothing but consolidate it, strengthening this area and its security,” said Clement Beaune.
